Balderdash!
November 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment
So-
Back in Traverse City my house was kind-of famous for some serious “gaming”…
Be it midnight backyard badminton or 10+ person (VERY serious)- sessions of Balderdash.
For those of you not familiar with this game I’ll do you a favor and share a bit o’ greatness with you.
Balderdash is “the hilarious bluffing game” -yes, and well,
umm-
basically players try to out bullshit each other by creating phony definitions for already bizarre REAL words.
I have kept each and every single scrap of paper from our Balderdash gatherings-
Here is a sampling of genius:
|
Lobcock-
A lazy return of the shuttlecock in the game of badminton.
Scroop-
A spoon for scooping poop.
Urd- Bougie- Camerlingo- (what?). Huckaback- Shilpit- (huh?). |
These beauties are not to be accredited to me… no, these are the handiwork of my dear sweet friends.
And they kill me. Every time I read them.
I am bringing Balderdash out of hiding.
It is time.
(Here’s one more for ya)
*Parget-
A polite way of saying you forgot.

*Best book of all time.
From “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”:
“The menu varied.
By the time they woke up in the
morning, breakfast was coming down.
After a brief shower of orange juice,
low clouds of sunny-side up eggs moved
in followed by pieces of toast. Butter and
jelly sprinkled down for the toast. And
most of the time it rained milk afterwards.
For lunch one day, frankfurters,
already in their rolls, blew in from the
northwest at about five miles an hour.
There were mustard clouds nearby.
Then the wind shifted to the east and
brought in baked beans.
A drizzle of soda finished off the meal.
Dinner one night consisted of lamb
chops, becoming heavy at times, with
occasional ketchup. Periods of peas and
baked potatoes were followed by gradual
clearing, with a wonderful Jell-O setting
in the west.”
So great. Really. (smile).
I am going into Ewan’s class to read with the wee ones this afternoon.
Maybe they’ll have my book (mine is MIA)-

My sweet boyfriend-Aaron, has the finely tuned ear of a musicphile.
Well,
minus a few genres… (Brrrrrrazil).
Anyhoo-
When one is seeking something musical- especially if ye seekers wish for a flavor from the “alt-country/rock/lo-fi somethinr’other” category, Aaron knows all about it.
He just knows.
I usually really like his stuff.
BUT,
sometimes-
I LOVE IT.
AND
Lambchop=love.

So,
Every one has their own method of discovering new music. I use Pandora and yes, Myspace.
I found these guys about a year ago on the Myspace.
They played in a basement bar here in Portland last night and I can now say that Belaire live= super cute, well executed, lots o’ gear- weird keyboards and melodic vocals.
They were great!
Seriously cute.
Serious.

Cartograms of the 2008 Election.

- “A cartogram is a map in which the sizes of states are rescaled according to their population. That is, states are drawn with size proportional not to their acreage but to the number of their inhabitants, states with more people appearing larger than states with fewer, regardless of their actual area on the ground. On such a map, for example, the state of Rhode Island, with its 1.1 million inhabitants, would appear about twice the size of Wyoming, which has half a million, even though Wyoming has 60 times the acreage of Rhode Island.”

I am stunned. I am in awe.
I’ve been periodically bursting into tears since last night- Tears of joy.
There are so many factors that contributed to Barack Obama’s win last night. As the analysts deconstruct his campaign and the phenomenon of this win- what will be (and has been) revealed- is a pragmatic, strategic implementation of a sense of having to- or having overcome. Translation: the previous administration was so devastating to the image, economy, general morale of this country that last night (partially as a reaction) was made possible.
BUT!
This sense of having to overcome a diabolical administration permeated throughout a discontented populous and suddenly (and it happened so FAST) we- collectively were calling for change on more than one front. This sense of having to overcome attached itself to many of the real and psychic wounds this country has been bound by.
AND TODAY!
We have healed some of those wounds….
The world celebrates the election of Barack Obama!
Something huge has happened- so huge! There has been a shift- a way has been made clear- something has cracked WIDE open!
Words fail me! (tryin’ here)…….
The United States celebrates as we are allowed to find some relief in that the history from which we were born has been reconciled with/by the history WE make. We celebrate the possibility of redefining who and what we are as a nation- and as a global community. The dialogue of inclusivity is REAL! We can now all dwell in the realm of possibility- each and every one of us.
I am amazed.
I am in awe.
